Sturgeon Point LighthouseAbout 15 min drive
Just north of Harrisville. A brick tower from 1870, still lit, with the keeper's house now a free maritime museum, a restored one-room schoolhouse, and old fishing boats and anchors on the grounds. Climb the tower for a few dollars on summer weekends, and hunt for Petoskey stones along the rocky point.
Harrisville State ParkAbout 7 min drive
Sandy Lake Huron beach in a stand of pine and cedar, with a paved two-mile trail that runs into town.
Greenbush MarketAcross the street
Gas and a newly redone convenience store with the basics, plus made-to-order pizza, sandwiches, and nachos. Open 7 am to 10 pm.
The Red ForkAbout 2 miles
The diner featured on PBS's Under the Radar Michigan. Breakfast, burgers, poutine, and pizza on weekend nights.
Shotmakers Sports Bar in Harrisville7 min drive
Burgers, perch dinners, pool tables, and live music on weekends.
Oscoda Beach ParkAbout 15 min drive
Right in downtown Oscoda. A long pier out into Lake Huron, a splash pad, playground, boardwalk, and free movies on the beach Wednesday nights in summer. Ice cream and restaurants are a short walk away.
Downtown East TawasAbout 30 min drive
Three blocks of shops, fudge and chocolate, restaurants, and an old-fashioned five and dime on Newman Street, ending at the harbor and beach. Tawas Point State Park and its 1876 lighthouse are just past town.
Lumberman's Monument on the River Road Scenic BywayAbout 35 min drive
A 14-foot bronze statue honoring the logging era, a visitor center with exhibits, and lookouts high above the Au Sable valley. Iargo Springs, with its 294 steps down to the springs, is a few minutes further along the same road.
Negwegon State ParkAbout 30 min drive
Four thousand acres of undeveloped forest and eight miles of empty shoreline, with easy hiking trails of one to three and a half miles and a designated dark sky preserve for stargazing. Roads in are sandy, so go with a capable vehicle.
TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE
Float the Au Sable.
The Au Sable River runs cold and clear through the national forest and meets Lake Huron in downtown Oscoda, about 15 minutes from the resort. Renting a canoe, kayak, or tube for an afternoon on it is the thing most guests say they'd do again.
Oscoda Canoe Rental will drop you upriver and pick you up at the end, so there's nothing to arrange except what time you want to start. Trips run from about two hours to a lazy four, with sandy spots along the way to pull off and swim. Dogs are welcome in the boat.
